Context Is Everything

During my time as a person who is part of a group chat on Instagram, I’ve had a lot of opportunities to listen and overhear conversations both on the Instagram group chat, and outside of it. My friends and I often go “hey guess what I heard today?” and then proceeds to recite what they heard that day. We make a game of it, and sometimes try to one-up each other when it comes to what thing can be funniest out of context. Here, after hours of scrolling up the chat to find the best ones, here are some of the better ‘Context is Everything’ submissions to the chat. You can use these for writing inspiration, as I have in the past. More often than not, I find ways to play with the things that are said here to come up with scene ideas. I just find it really fun to take random sentences and make entire scenes out of them.

“Get smacked" (used as a response)

“The length is very important. It makes the entire experience better.”

“No, Woodrow Wilson was not a volleyball.”

“You can bite me, Bismark”

“He’s trying to, like, sexualize a pumpkin patch.”

"I threw myself at a wall to see if I was an octopus”

“We are currently nestled between the Mormons and France.”

“It’s great to see my opponents grab their ankles in shame.”

“I touch every fridge.”

“He goes to hell. Straight to hell.”

“Hello, monkey. Do you speak spanish?”

“I must enter the fridge.”

“I am not cheerful, even though I am drinking wine.”

“Your face looks like this potato. It makes me sad, even when mashed.”

“I am not necessarily a dog.”

“Did the grandmother really give out grains of sand?”
